A Back-to-Studio Dance Checklist: Get Ready for a New Season

A new dance season is here, and there’s something exciting about stepping back into the studio!
Whether your dancer is returning for another year or getting ready for their very first class, a new season brings plenty to look forward to—new classes, new instructors, new friends, new choreography, and new goals. But before the music starts and those first combinations are taught, there’s a little preparation to do.
Getting organized before classes begin can make the transition into a new dance season feel much easier for the entire family. From making sure dance shoes still fit to packing the perfect dance bag, a little preparation now can prevent those last-minute scrambles later. And preparation isn’t just about having the right supplies. When dancers know they have everything they need, they can walk into the studio feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to learn.
Use this back-to-studio checklist to help your dancer start the season prepared for a year of movement, growth, and fun!
Dancewear & dress code essentials.
The right dancewear can make a big difference in a dancer’s comfort and ability to move. Appropriate clothing allows dancers to move freely while also giving instructors a clear view of their alignment, technique, and movement. Before the first class, check your dancer’s wardrobe and make sure everything still fits comfortably. Children and teens can grow surprisingly quickly, so last season’s favorite leotard or tights may not fit the same way they did a few months ago.
Depending on the class and studio requirements, your dancer may need:
- Leotards or required class attire
- Tights
- Dance shorts or leggings
- Appropriate tops
- Required studio uniform, if applicable
- An extra outfit for long rehearsal days
- Properly fitting clothing that allows instructors to see movement
Be sure to review your studio’s dress code before shopping. Having the appropriate attire ready for each class means your dancer can spend less time worrying about what they’re wearing and more time focusing on learning.
Don’t forget the shoes!
Dance shoes are just as important as dancewear. Different styles of dance require different footwear, and having the right shoes from the beginning of the season will help your dancer feel prepared from their very first class. Depending on their schedule, dancers may need:
- Ballet slippers
- Tap shoes
- Jazz shoes
- Contemporary or lyrical footwear
- Hip-hop sneakers
- Pointe shoes for eligible dancers
Take some time to check every pair before the season begins. Make sure shoes still fit properly, aren’t overly worn, and are appropriate for the class.
When purchasing new dance shoes, remember that fit matters. Shoes should be secure and comfortable without restricting movement. Avoid buying shoes that are significantly too large with the expectation that your dancer will “grow into them.” Proper fit is especially important for technique and safety.
It’s also a great idea to label shoes with your dancer’s name. With so many similar-looking dance shoes in a studio, a simple label can help prevent mix-ups. If your dancer has new shoes, give them a chance to break them in properly before an important rehearsal or performance. And if those well-loved shoes have seen better days, it may be time for a replacement.
Hair & personal dance bag essentials.
A prepared dancer is a happy dancer! Having hair secured appropriately for class helps keep it out of the way and allows dancers and instructors to focus on technique and movement.
Rather than searching for supplies before every class, consider keeping a dedicated dance bag packed and ready to go.
Dance bag checklist.
- Hair ties
- Bobby pins
- Hairbrush or comb
- Hairspray or gel
- Extra tights
- Extra socks
- Reusable water bottle
- Small towel
- Personal hygiene items
- Band-aids and basic first-aid supplies
- Snacks for longer class or rehearsal days
Having these essentials in one place can save time and make busy afternoons much less stressful. For younger dancers in particular, a dedicated dance bag can also help them begin learning responsibility by keeping track of their belongings.
Stay hydrated & fueled.
Dance is physical activity, and dancers need energy to learn, move, and stay focused throughout class and rehearsal.
Make sure your dancer brings a reusable water bottle to the studio and gets into the habit of drinking water throughout the day—not just when they become thirsty. Nutrition is important, too. Dancers who arrive hungry may have a harder time maintaining their energy and concentration, especially during longer classes, rehearsals, or intensive training days.
Whenever possible, offer a balanced meal before a long day of dancing and keep nutritious snacks available between classes. Fruits, yogurt, granola bars, nuts, or other convenient snacks can provide a helpful energy boost. The goal isn’t complicated: keep your dancer hydrated, fueled, and ready to move!
Get organized before the first class.
Once the school year gets underway, life can get busy quickly. Between homework, sports, activities, family schedules, and dance, it can be easy for important dates to sneak up on you.
Take a little time now to get organized before the season begins.
Organization checklist.
- Save your dancer’s class schedule
- Add classes to the family calendar
- Note important studio dates and events
- Save the studio’s contact information
- Review tuition and payment information
- Know arrival and pickup procedures
- Review studio policies
- Label all dance belongings
Adding dance classes to your family calendar alongside school and other activities can make weekly planning much easier. You can also set reminders for important dates, performances, registration deadlines, and other studio events.
A few minutes of planning now can save a lot of stress once the season is in full swing.
Prepare your dancer mentally.
Getting ready for a new dance season isn’t only about shopping and organization. Your dancer’s mindset matters just as much.
A new season is an opportunity to set goals, try something new, and continue growing as a dancer. Encourage your dancer to think about what they want to accomplish this year. Maybe they want to improve their flexibility, learn a new skill, become more confident performing, or simply have fun with their friends.
Remind them that progress takes time. Dance can be challenging, and it’s completely normal for dancers to struggle with a new technique or combination. Encourage them to ask questions, listen to their instructors, and keep trying—even when something doesn’t come easily.
Most importantly, celebrate effort rather than perfection. Making mistakes is part of learning. Every correction, missed step, and challenging combination is an opportunity to grow. After time away from the studio, dancers may need a little time to get back into their routine, and that’s okay.
The best mental preparation is simply showing up ready to learn, grow, and have fun.
